What's inside 310S

8 Topic areas

Safety & Shop Practice Engines & Support Systems Electrical & Emissions Drive Train Suspension, Steering & Brakes HVAC Hybrid & EV Body, Frame & ADAS

Sample notes

  • Compression readings — Healthy gas engines run 130–180 psi and must be within ~10% across cylinders.
  • CAN bus check — With the key off, CAN-H to CAN-L should read about 60 Ω (120 Ω terminator at each end).
  • Fuel trims — Big positive LTFT at idle = vacuum leak. Big positive under load = fuel-delivery problem.

Sample practice question

A click-type torque wrench should be stored set to:

  1. Its maximum value
  2. Its minimum or lowest setting
  3. The last torque you used
  4. Upside down

Why: Storing a click-type torque wrench at its lowest setting relaxes the internal spring and keeps calibration accurate.

What's inside 310T

8 Topic areas

Safety & Workplace Practices Diesel Engines & Support Electrical & Electronic Systems Fuel, Emissions & Engine Mgmt Transmission & Drivetrain Air Brakes, Steering & Suspension HVAC & Climate Control Hydraulic & Pneumatic Systems

Sample notes

  • Air brake basics — Typical governor range is roughly 100–125 psi cut-in / cut-out; low-pressure warning must activate by 60 psi.
  • Diesel injection — Modern common-rail systems run 1,800–2,500 bar. Never crack a high-pressure line with the engine running.
  • DPF regen — Active regen injects post-combustion fuel to burn soot — watch EGT and backpressure data during diagnosis.

Sample practice question

A heavy-duty air-brake system must provide a low-pressure warning by approximately:

  1. 40 psi
  2. 60 psi
  3. 90 psi
  4. 120 psi

Why: Federal standards require the low-pressure warning device to activate at or above 60 psi as reservoir pressure falls.

What's inside 310J

Topic areas

Safety & Workplace Air Brakes / Wheel Ends Suspension / Coupling Trailer Body / Chassis

Sample notes

  • Air brake basics — Tractor protection valve trips ~40-60 psi to save tractor air if trailer separates.
  • ABS — Trailer ABS power is typically pin 7 (blue wire) on the J560 connector.

Sample practice question

A trailer relay valve is used to:

  1. Speed up the application and release of the trailer service brakes
  2. Control the tractor brakes
  3. Control ABS wheel speed sensors
  4. Limit trailer speed

Why: A relay valve uses the control signal from the blue line to quickly apply air directly from the trailer tanks to the brake chambers.
